McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club, also known as the “flag club”, showed their appreciation to BSA 496, BSA 303,  BSA 531, BSA 2150 and the McKinney Area Christian Home School Association at a breakfast on December 14 at Eldorado Country Club.  Five organizations provided delivery and retrieval for a record number of 1,380 U.S. Flags to homes and businesses on five holidays in 2011.

Jeff Caserotti, Vice President for Flag Fundraising, was Master of Ceremonies.  Also helping distribute certificates and checks were Chuck Koehler and Mayor Brian Loughmiller, also members of McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club.  Those attending and receiving certificates of appreciation included:

BSA 496 – Lisa Zavala, Flag Coordinator; Ken Davis, Assistant Scout Master; and Joseph Davis, Scout.  The BSA troop delivered flags for 10 routes and received a check for $4,500 and certificates for all Scout helpers.

BSA 303 – Tom Fris, Flag Coordinator, was unable to attend, but sent Gene Sera and Bill Bilyeu to accept certificates for all Scout helpers and a check for $2,550 for delivering flags for 6 routes.

BSA 531 – Tim McGranahan, Flag Coordinator, and his wife Margaret accepted certificates for all Scout helpers and a check for $1,800 flags for delivering 4 routes.

BSA 2150 – Laliya Agrawal, Flag Coordinator; and Sarah Ammons, troop treasurer, accepted certificates for all Scout helpers and a check for $1,050 to maintain 2 routes and provide for the retirement of damaged flags.

McKinney Area Christian Home School Association, represented by the family of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Marshall and their five children, received a check for $450 and certificates of appreciation for maintaining one route.

Also attending and receiving a certificate of appreciation were three officers from the Collin County Sheriff’s Office who provided assistance in helping Rotarians prepare the flags for service from the S.C.O.R.E. program.  The officers were Deputy Ella Even, Lt. Eddie Dent, and Sheriff Terry Box.

A total of $10,350 was distributed to the five non-profit organizations as their share of the flag proceeds for community service.   Throughout the 2011-12 year of Stacey Kemp’s presidency, donations either have or will be distributed to local and global projects such as the McKinney Education Foundation, the McKinney YMCA, Collin County Meals on Wheels, Clean Water projects in Africa and India, the Wheelchair Foundation, and the Rotary International Polio Plus project in cooperation with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to immunize all the world’s children from the ravages of polio.

Local funding also includes the Rotary Youth Exchange program and Rotary’s 4-Way Test Speech competition for high school students.  McKinney Sunrise Rotary Club sponsors two Interact Clubs for students at McKinney North and McKinney Boyd high schools and will co-sponsor a Rotaract Club with McKinney Rotary Club at the Collin College Central Park campus.
